Tooth whitening strips are one of the many options available to patients who desire whiter brighter teeth. While we don't go from a dark yellow to a stark white, many of these over-the-counter products and products available in dental offices can raise the shade of your tooth several shades. White strips come on a clear plastic strip. The best way to apply a white strip is to a dry tooth. You can use a Kleenex or gauze to dry the teeth right before putting in the white strip. The white strip itself is removed from the strip and placed on the teeth. Many patients worry about every piece of the strip touching the tooth. If the white strip is adhered to a dry tooth, it will permeate into the teeth and do its job without covering every little nook and cranny of the tooth. We find it easiest to put in the upper white strip before the lower white strip. Resist the temptation to play with it with your tongue for the duration of wearing it and try not to move your lips. It will help keep the white strip in place. All white strips have a different duration of time. I would recommend using the manufacturer's specifications on the amount of time to wear it. Some are 30 minutes, some are less, some are longer. If you experience any tooth sensitivity, remove the white strip immediately. After wearing the white strip, gently remove it with your fingers and brush and rinse your teeth with water. You may experience some cold sensitivity after white strips.
