Hello, I'm Dr. Gary Cash. Today we're going to talk about how to whiten teeth. This is a hot topic amongst most people. Everyone desires whiter, brighter teeth. Today I'd like to give a few do's and don'ts and some helpful tips to help you achieve whiter teeth. Or keep your teeth as white as they are. A lot of people have interest in whitening products because they want their teeth to be whiter. There are a variety of products, over-the-counter and in-office professionally applied products that can whiten teeth. Whitening products that can help whiten teeth are white strips, bleach. Whether it's over-the-counter or professional office bleaching. There are also a variety of mouth rinses and whitening toothpaste. Please be certain that you know that the more abrasive or harder bristled toothbrush will not whiten your teeth more. What this will do is abrade gums. I always recommend a soft bristle toothbrush for all of my patients. Because a firm bristle is not getting your teeth whiter or cleaner. You just run the risk of abrading gum tissue. I strongly discourage medium and hard bristled toothbrushes. All of these should be used with a degree of of caution. And you really should seek the advice of a dental professional before you're using any of them. A good example of this is a patient who has a white filling on the front tooth. And then applies whitening products. If a patient does this and has a white filling on their front tooth unaware or maybe it was placed years ago. And they've forgotten about this. And you apply whitening agents whether over-the-counter or professional whitening agents the teeth and the surrounding tooth enamel will whiten. While the filling will remain the same color. Patients will do this and experience this and they all of a sudden find a filling that looks darker in the middle of a front tooth. This also applies to teeth who have porcelain crowns on them. And what I mean is if you have front tooth with a porcelain crown that was shade matched to your teeth and then you whiten, all of a sudden your porcelain crown looks darker. Because the tooth enamel is lightening but not the crown. Other things to look out for with over-the-counter bleaching products or professional products are tooth sensitivity and temporarily damaging the gum tissue. While most products are very safe and effective whether they're over-the-counter or in-office I strongly recommend you seeking the advice of a dental professional before using any of these products. I hope this helps. Thank you.
