Hi, I'm Dr. Gary Cash. Today let's talk about a project to do about teeth with kindergarten children. This subject is especially important to me. In my practice I see a lot of adults that are fearful of the dentist. If we can get our children early on discussing, identifying, and moving forward with healthy oral hygiene habits, this leads to happy, healthy adult teeth and adult patients who are also less fearful of the dentist. A great project for this is to put together a calendar for kids to put a smiling and a happy face on the calendar every time they brush their teeth. We want kids to brush their teeth at least twice a day. Here I put together a calendar that would be a great example of this. We could post this near the place where the kids brush their teeth, and then we can put a smiley face both morning and evening brush, when they brush their teeth. Another very good thing to do on the calendar at your discretion is maybe midway through the month, or towards the end of the month, we can make a special note on there to check the toothbrush. And what we're looking for is we want kids to realize when a toothbrush is frayed or too old and needs to be replaced, and just not effective anymore. We can put together a really nice graphic picture of that showing fuzzy frayed bristles, which is not an effective toothbrush, and a sound and toothbrush with lots of integrity and strong bristles. This is the kind of brush we want to be using. Now I don't expect the brush to be frayed midway through the month, maybe not even at the end of the month, but it's just another tool to get kids to think about and identify when their brush needs replacement. Another very important topic of discussion when you do this is to actually show children that all we need is a green pea size of toothpaste on the brush. Any more than that and we're really just wasting the toothpaste, and possibly even abrading teeth. The toothpaste commercials tend to show a large swirl of toothpaste on the brush. That's really too much for both children and adults. A smear or a green pea size is all we need. I hope this is helpful and informative. Good luck, thank you.
