Oral Hygiene Promotion for Preschoolers

04:22

Oral hygiene promotion for preschoolers is very important to prevent a fear of going to the dentist. Find out about oral hygiene promotion for preschoolers with help from a dental expert in this free video clip.

Hi, I'm Dr. Gary Cash, and today I'd like to talk about oral hygiene promotion for preschoolers. This is especially important to me. What I find is many of my adult patients have dental fear and almost always this dental fear steams from a bad childhood experience. So if we can acclimate children early on to the dentist, and start instilling good oral hygiene habits by making the perception that the dentist is fun, we can really curve dental fear later in life, and we can also lead to happier healthy smiles. A good way to do this is to come up with fun coloring games, mix and match games and activities for young kids. I've created a few examples for you. A good example is a drawing, and I called it finders keepers, and we want to color things that make your mouth healthy. Color the apple, color the dental floss, we don't want to color the football, carrots are healthy, milk is healthy, and balloons don't really pertain to our teeth. It's a fun activity for preschoolers, and gradually acclimating them to the dental environment makes them more comfortable when they do finally visit the office. Another one I have is count and color, and what we have is several toothbrushes, and we want the kids to color them bright, and color them all different colors. Another think I indicated on here that you can see in the closeup is have the kids draw a pea-size of toothpaste. And this is really important to start instilling a healthy habit. The amount of toothpaste we need on a toothbrush is generally the size of a green pea. More than that and you're really just wasting it. Of course in the toothpaste commercials we show large swirls of toothpaste on the brush, but the reality of it is, is we really need just about a green pea size, especially for the kids. Another graphic that we've come up with is visiting the dentist. And just to help kids familiarize with things they're going to see in the dental office, products, equipment, and when the kids see these things before, and get to color and they're engaged in these activities, they're less fearful when they see them in the office for the first time. I hope this is informative and helps. Thank you.
